Photo an hour for Monday August 20th

This was a holiday in the Yukon – Discovery Day.  Yay for long weekends.  DH and I were part of an alternative school years ago and traditionally on this weekend those of us who are still in the Yukon try and have a get together.  Not many of us here this year.  One man from Alaska and his son, another couple from Whitehorse and two of their daughters, and of course DD # 1 and her partner and children, and their friend from Vancouver.

The house was full in the morning and I needed a bit of alone time.  My camera was downstairs so there were no pictures for 9 a.m. or 10 a.m.  Suffice to say I was looking at blogs and answering e-mails Smile

11 a.m.  Breakfast of pancakes and maple syrup, the most delicious smoked salmon and watermelon.  Look at DGD’s neon green nail polish, courtesy of Janelle from Vancouver.

12 p.m. The breakfast dishes are done…

IMG_5414

1 p.m.  At the campground, enjoying the sunny weather and singing along with some mandolin.

IMG_5415

2 p.m.  Guess where we’re going…

IMG_5417

3 p.m.  Still swimming.  I thought the pool was only open until 4 p.m. but it turned out that it was open until 5.  We had a heck of a time tearing the kids out of the pool.

IMG_5420

4 p.m.  Would you believe I forgot to take a photo.  About this time we finally got the kids out of the pool and we were chomping on ice cream cones.

5 p.m.  Hanging out with my friend in her camper while she does some dinner prep.

IMG_5421

6 p.m.  Dinner’s up: trout, smokies, roast potatoes and salad.  Very yummy.

IMG_5422

7 p.m. Headed downtown to check the mail, but there wasn’t any.  Oh yeah it’s a holiday.  Love the new decor on this building downtown.  It’s a coffee shop with very good food and drinks and lots of great art for sale.

IMG_5424

8 p.m.  In bed already, doing a little crossword before I go to sleep.  It’s been a long weekend and I’m tired tonight.

Photo an hour for Sunday August 12th

My hubby went hunting for the weekend, along with son-in-law, nephew and DD # 3’s boyfriend.  DD # 1 was working nights all weekend, so DD # 3 and I took care of the grandkids.  DD # 3 slept over along with her two dogs and D and E were there as well.

9:00 a.m. The dogs want out and about for a morning romp.

IMG_5365

10:00 a.m. The kids are up and having breakfast.  Two bowls of cereal each.

IMG_5368

11:00 a.m. I saw a peach pie on someone’s blog last week.  I can’t remember who it was and I was just trying to find it and Google Reader disappeared.  Hopefully it will return or maybe someone can tell me where I saw the peach pie.  I just had to emulate it!  We seldom get good tasting peaches here, but these were on sale for 76 cents/kg.  They weren’t ripe but the price was right to buy them and see if they ripened okay.   I moved them from sunny spot to sunny spot for a few days and they did ripen nicely.  Only one of them rotted.  So it’s time for peach pie.

IMG_5370

12:00 p.m.  DD # 3 came prepared to make jam with four cartons of strawberries.  This batch will be strawberry rhubarb.  DGD is mashing the strawberries, while DGS studiously slices the rhubarb.

IMG_5371

1:00 p.m. First batch of jam is going in the jars.

IMG_5372

2:00 p.m.  It’s been a productive time: peach pie, strawberry/rhubarb jam, strawberry jam and some apricot jam I made last weekend.  Now the kids and I are off to the swimming pool.

IMG_5374

3:00 p.m. Still swimming.  You might think it is our own private pool, but it’s not.  There were two other kids there.

IMG_5375

4:00 p.m. The first swim is over – we’re going back for the evening swim later on.  At home DD # 3 is making button jewellery for DGD’s birthday party next weekend.  The kids had to help too.

IMG_5379

5:00 p.m. We’ve had a bite to eat and it’s time to sample the pie! YUM!

IMG_5381

6:00 p.m. We’re on our way back to the pool.  DD # 3 has left for home and the rest of us are going swimming.

IMG_5384

7:00 p.m.  DGS put the snorkel gear on but never put his face in the water.  Too funny Smile

IMG_5386

8:00 p.m.  Yes we’re still at the pool.  DGD and the one other boy who was there swimming are telling jokes with the lifeguard.  She was trying to tell them “anti-jokes”.  Eg.  You say to me “knock knock”.  I don’t reply at all.  That’s an anti-joke.  It’s apparently funny because it is such a surprise.  The kids didn’t get it either….

IMG_5392

9:00 p.m.  We’re home from the pool and the kids (and me) are starving.  DH is home and he’s going to make us grilled cheese.

IMG_5393

10:00 p.m.  DD # 1 finished her shift at 8 p.m. and she has finally arrived to pick up the kids (one hour drive and she probably went home first).  I am definitely going to bed as soon as they leave.  It’s been a fun day but I’m pooped. Smile

Friday Night Sew In Report

As usual, I wasn’t as productive as I hoped to be, but I did accomplish something, so YAY!

I got one of the baby quilts sandwiched and ready for quilting.  I’m going to do straight line quilting on either side of the seams on this one.

IMG_5402

But then I had blocks all laid out ready to sew by my sewing machine for one of the 2 inch postage stamp blocks, so I had to sew that up before I could start quilting.  Here are the two completed blocks auditioning on some dark purple.  I think I like this more than the one I tried them with before.

Another exciting day in Disneyland

“Look out the window!  Look out the window!”  I interrupted DH’s dialogue on his work.  He is an extrovert and doesn’t know it, but I do because he has to talk for an hour or so when he gets home about what he did at work that day.  But this was too exciting – I couldn’t listen to him….

When I saw this rump walking by my kitchen window, I knew immediately what it was.  They have been hanging out nearby for a while, and one of my neighbours has seen them a few times, but this is the first time they’ve been in my yard.

Please note that I measured my window height and it is 109 inches off the ground.  That is nine feet, one inch, and the rump was crossing at the top of my window… Imagine the height of the head…

IMG_5399

When I rushed out and starting clicking with my camera they looked to make sure it was safe, but didn’t run off… Two babies…

IMG_5400

And their mom…

IMG_5401

In less exciting news here are the two baby quilt tops I made on the weekend.  I have a basket at my LQS where people drop off scraps that would otherwise be put in the garbage.  Usually they are smaller pieces that I use for postage stamp blocks, or the little blocks and triangles for my never ending tiny block quilt, or strips for my colours quilt.  But occasionally I get a big bag of fabric from someone.  Often it is older fabric, but hey, I like it all.  The latest bag had enough squares for these two quilts.

IMG_5395

I have backing for them and hope to get them quilted up this weekend.  They will go to the local nursing station and be given to a new baby in our town.

And I have to show you  the knitted plane cover that has taken shape in Whitehorse.  There is a Douglas DC-3 that acted as a weather vane outside the airport, although it was recently moved next door to the Transportation Museum.  Well it has been yarn bombed.  So much fun!

A photo an Hour for Saturday August 4th

I’m super late getting this post up… as it is my Sunday photo an hour day today…

We were on a four day boating trip with friends and the 4th was our return home day.

8:30 a.m. Waking up to a beautiful sunny day – the view from our bed in the boat.

IMG_5299

9:30 a.m. Water on the campfire for tea.

IMG_5301

10:30 a.m.  It’s time to make breakfast.  DH chopping up some firewood.

IMG_5303

11:30 a.m.  My brunch… a bacon, tomato and avocado sandwich on toast with no dressing.  Delicious, despite what it looks like.  Don’t you love my Hercules plate?

IMG_5304

12:30 p.m. A little walk out to the point to check it out.  Lovely clear water.

IMG_5306

1:30 p.m. The boys are off hiking while Janine and I play around the fire.  She is colouring on white rocks.  I was working on a cross stitch.

IMG_5309

2:30 p.m. Time to pack up and wend our way home.

. IMG_5310

3:30 p.m. It is close to dead calm.  No sailing available right now.

IMG_5311

4:30 p.m. Honestly DH was having a wonderful time.  He’s just squinting from the sun.  Notice the untanned band on his arm.  I had to borrow his watch for the day so I’d know when to take pictures.

IMG_5313

5:30 p.m. As we rounded Scotty Island we said goodbye to our friends.  They were taking a different route so they could pull their boat as they were having motor troubles all day.

IMG_5315

6:30 p.m. We stopped at this picturesque spot for a little “stretch your legs” break.  The water is really high this year and there aren’t as many stopping spots as there would normally be.

IMG_5317

7:30 p.m.  We ran into our other sailing friends, out for an overnight camp.

IMG_5322

8:30 p.m. Ah, now there’s a bit of wind and DH wants to try a little sailing.

IMG_5328

9:30 p.m. I’ve retired to the inside couch to read my book.

IMG_5330

10:30 p.m. Home at last.  My potatoes look like they survived four days of neglect.  And I’m off to bed.

 IMG_5339

One last photo of the muskrat that swam by when we were beaching our boat.
